It’s Official…

I am a yoga teacher.
Myself and 19 fellow yogis became official yoga teachers last Sunday, May 22, 2011. It’s difficult to put into words how special and truly beautiful the journey through yoga teacher training was to me. But here goes!
I walked into a room with 20 students and 3 teachers at the first of 5 weekends of teacher training at Be Luminous Yoga on January 27, 2011. I was full of nerves and didn’t quite know what to expect.
Was I going to be practicing yoga 10 hours a day?…who were all these other trainees?…what would they think of me?…they all have stronger practices than me?…and on, and on.
What I quickly learned was that, yes, I would be practicing A LOT of yoga and would be practicing teaching a lot of yoga. But, perhaps, the scariest of it all was that I would be taking a deeper look into myself, my thoughts, my way of being…and ready or not, I would have to share these things with all these people I just met…yikes!
Over the course of 5 months (and 200 hours) of teacher training I learned so many valuable and interesting things like:
The literal definition of yoga is “to yoke”.
The Yoga Sutras is the main philosophical text of leading a yogic way of life.
How to modify for a low back injury (at the expense of my own low back injury).
The supinator muscle is responsible for inward rotation of the forearm because supinator is like soup, and you pour a can of soup by rotating your forearm inward.
A compressed disc between the vertebrate is like jelly doughnut. A ruptured disk is when the jelly is squished out of the doughnut.
After several 3+ hour intense practices in a sweaty room, you really get to know one another!
But most importantly, I learned a little more each weekend about myself. I gained confidence in my voice and my way of being. I learned to connect on a much deeper level with these amazing group of teachers.
I learned how to show up in my own life.
Each moment is special and worth giving all of my attention to. Each person I meet is special and worth my time. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of the Inaugural Teacher Training at Be Luminous. The other teachers I shared this experience with will always be so special to me and I am ever so grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with them.
Congratulations, my love!!!!!! You are such a joy
Congrats Gina!! I didn’t know you were doing this, but knowing your love for yoga makes me know this is a great achievement for you. My mom is currently getting her certification to teach yoga as well, and from what she tells me there is SO much more to it than you’d think. I am so happy for you!!
G – It was truly an honor to hear your voice, and further to call you my friend. xo J
